Not Again! Medical Doctors in Lagos Embark on 3 days Strike

It is a shame that every profession in Nigeria do not abide by the ethics of its profession. In Nigeria, bankers are now know for corporate prostitution while the medical practitioners have throw their ethics to the dogs. The primary responsibility of a doctor is to save lives and that should come before any monetary gains. In developed countries, doctors volunteer for free. Some even volunteer to work in countries outside their continent especially countries in Africa.

I am not against getting paid for services rendered, but I find it disgusting that medical doctors would embark on strikes for mere frivolities. I know how many lives are usually lost when these confused Nigerian medical practitioners go on strike.
It is a shame, they are on it again. All public sector medical doctors in Lagos state under the umbrella of he Medical Guild have embarked on a three-day warning strike in protest of non-payment of salaries.
The strike began at 8.00 am today, Wednesday 18th February, 2015 and will end at 8.00am on Saturday.
The strike was announced by Chairman of the Guild, Biyi Kufo who insisted that the doctors were forced to take the action after several ultimatums and notices sent to the state government yielded no positive results.
I guess such statement should justify the action?

  1. Medical doctors are not entitled to free amenities in Nigeria. They have to pay bills like every other decent working person. In my opinion, they are over worked and under paid. Countries where doctors volunteer can not be compared to Nigeria. For starters they earn much more than Nigerian doctors and can afford to live on money they have saved, some of them are entitled to 'kind payment' such as housing, feeding, maintenance for self and family, payment of children fee, etc.

At the end of the day, if these doctors are not comfortable, they might not be able to perform their duties well. Imagine a doctor who has been evicted from his home, children have been sent home from school and has not eaten a decent meal in days performing an operation. I think not treating these people who have volunteered their lives for us well will do more damage than good.

Besides, the government can afford to contribute millions for campaign yet they can't afford to pay doctors who care for the masses. Who is fooling who? Live and let's live. They totally deserve better.
